US Hwy 30 -- Detour: Door County Update

This past week has really flown by here at my friends' Wagon Trail Campground -- A truly lovely facility with large campsites set far apart and deep in the woods. It's a lot more like a national park than a typical RV park, and I've had a really nice few days to hang out, catch up with myself and visit with my friends. I've also done a little bit of exploring in the area, but besides saying it is a beautiful part of the world I don't have much to report.

To be completely honest, it would be very easy for me to stay here for an extended period of time, maybe even for an entire season. Right now, however, it's been too short a time since my previous "long stay" in Pennsylvania and I'm feeling the pull of being on the road. Plus, I've got some stuff to do out in the Pacific Northwest that I can't keep putting off. So, I've added a season in Door County to the list for the future and am packing up my gear to hit the road tomorrow… Stay tuned!

Hi Mac - we love campgrounds like what you describe about Wagron Trail. We live in Columbus, OH and so that place is within a reasonable distance. If you get a chance please share other things to do in that area that you thought were worthwhile (and good places to eat). Did you travel to Washington Island?

Well, Barbara.... I've actually been thinking about how to answer your question... There is a LOT to do in Door County: All forms of water activities (fishing, swimming, kayaks, sailing, etc.); There are also all forms of cultural activities (historical sites, farm shows, antiques, maritime museum, etc.); "The Clearing" is there; numerous lovely small towns, each with its own style; there are fish boils galore, and many, many, many fine places to eat.... Dick and Cheri at the Wagon Trail Campground have been there for 20 years, know everything about the area and are very happy to make suggestions and help make arrangements... So, I don't know if that answers your question... Bottom line: If I'm thinking about going there for an entire season, you can probably be confident that there is plenty of interesting stuff to do and see, plus plenty of great food to enjoy in lovely settings... Okay?

Hi Mac:
I do appreciate you taking the time to respond. I was hoping for a few specific places of interest but I can certainly do some research on the area to see what all would appeal to us. It does sound like an interesting area and I do LOVE to explore and go on adventures!!

I think I first became aware of you and your adventures through SP Kennel’s blog because of your maintaining their blog during race season. Since then I have, here and there, read your postings of your continued adventures. Lots of fun and I certainly wish I had the ability to take off on adventures as you do. I’ve been curious how you’re able to do what you do. Will you share what you do for work that allows you to take off for long periods? It doesn’t have to be real specific because I’m sure you wish to be careful about certain personal things but just some idea would be nice. I’ll reciprocate by telling you that I am a financial/tax accountant specializing in working with small businesses which ties me to an office way more than I like. I live for the next adventure (last fall we did 2 weeks to Yellowstone living in a van and we loved it!!) that we head out on even if it’s just riding the back rounds touring on my motorcycle.

Thanks again for writing back,
Barbara

Barbara -- I think researching your own options will be better than me making suggestions... After all, my three favorite things were watching/cheering/arguing baseball with locals at a sport's bar, shopping for supplies at the unbelievably densely packed Piggly Wiggly, and tracking down my niece after the battery on my electric bike ran out and she needed a ride back to the campground from very far away... My "likes" are generally not the "usual" for others... Okay?

Your question about "what I do" that "allows (me) to take off for long periods" isn't really one I can answer... At least not easily or simply... I have no permanent "home" or "job"... So I'm not actually "off on adventures"... I live "on the road" and find/make "adventures" wherever I am... This "adventure" is just my life... I do a variety of odd jobs wherever I am... Either "virtually" on the internet or "part-time" in a locality... That's really all the disclosure I'm willing to make in this venue...

Perhaps this quote -- a favorite of mine -- will help explain my motivations and life choices:

"Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore. Some will tell you that you are mad, and nearly all will say, ‘What is the use?’ For we are a nation of shopkeepers, and no shopkeeper will look at research which does not promise him a financial return within a year. And so you will sledge nearly alone, but those with whom you sledge will not be shopkeepers: that is worth a good deal. If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin’s egg."
-- Apsley Cherry-Garrard (The Worst Journey in the World)

You can do anything with your life that you want to...

Best, Mac
